Spray Paint Mania Strikes Again: Front Porch Light

Sometimes I get a literally overwhelming urge to spruce up something around my house.  It’s a sickness.  Luckily for me, we live in an older house so there are dozens and dozens of projects that can scratch any DIY or home improvement itch I might have.

On Saturday as I came up the front stairs from getting the mail, I started eyeing that old tacky brass front porch light.  The one that has been there for at least the six years we have lived in this house.  All of a sudden, I hated that light.  I could no longer look at that ugly brass light.  Something had to be done.  I remembered that I had half of the can of spray paint that I used on our kitchen knobs sitting in the garage.  Thinking it couldn’t hurt anything, and even if I screwed up royally it couldn’t make the light any uglier, I had Zac take down the ugly front porch light so I could paint it.

This thing was nasty.

So down it came, and Zac gave it all a good scrubbing, including the glass panes.  Then it was bedtime so we all went to bed.  :)  The next afternoon, gave it another rinse and dried it off really well, taped off the switches on the base, and took it downstairs to the garage to get set up for painting.

And then we had a water war.

{Forgive our janky backyard.  It needs a lot of work, but two 60-pound dogs ensure that won’t be happening for awhile.}

Little Brother just kind of hung out.

After the water war, I headed downstairs to get to work on the light.  I laid all the parts out on my painting plank, as I like to call it, and started spraying.

As you can see, there were a lot of little screws and bolts and such, and some were already missing off the light, so I had to be careful not to lose any more of them.  I gave the pieces a quick two coats.  I used Rustoleum paint, which gives really good coverage so I didn’t need to go back and add any more.

I let it dry overnight, and when we got home on Monday afternoon I had Zac put it back up.  He’s the handy one when it comes to stuff like that, so I just let him do his thing.

And I helped a little.

Cole provided some comic relief.

And in the end, we had a better looking front porch light.

All for the low, low price of zero dollars, since I used spray paint I already had on hand.  I couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out.  It looks SO much nicer than that ugly brass.  What do you think?

Now that the porch light has had a makeover, and I’ve posted pictures of my yucky siding for all the world to see, I am eyeballing that front door HARD.  I think a light grey for the siding, blast of bright white for the trim, and a black front door would look nice.  Or maybe I go bold for the door and choose a red or orange.  And that front porch has got to GO.  Soon.  But that’s another project for another day {and a bigger budget}.

Have you done anything fun around the house lately?
