5QF for April 27

Time for another Five Question Friday.  These are always so fun.  This is the last Friday in April, can you believe it?  And next Friday we will be frantically getting ready to head to Disney World!  I planned our vacation so long ago, it seems, and now I can hardly believe it is almost here.  Time really does fly when you are an adult.

5QF is hosted by My Little Life.  Don’t forget to check out the blog-hop at the bottom of the post!

1. Do you make your kids finish all the food on their plates?
Well, I have a not quite 3-year old and a 7-month old, so I try to only put on their plates what I think their stomachs will hold, which isn’t very much right now.  But no, I don’t make them clean their plates.  I want them to listen to their bodies to know when they are full instead of just eating something because it’s there {like I do}.  In an age where restaurants give you enough food for three people as one “meal”, I would like to encourage healthy portion sizes when it comes to food for my family.  I’m the one who serves them, so if I give them too much that’s on me and they shouldn’t have to eat past fullness because I went crazy with the serving spoon.

2. Do you give an allowance?
Not yet, but I will.  I never had an allowance growing up, and never really had any set chores, which not only meant I had no spending money and was at the mercy of whatever tasks my parents needed done at that particular time {usually cleaning the kitchen, and to this day I HATE cleaning the kitchen}, but it also meant that I didn’t really have any responsibility.  So when I went to college I didn’t know how to do laundry, didn’t keep my room clean, wasn’t organized, didn’t do regular car maintenance, all that stuff.  I think an allowance is less about money and more about teaching children responsibility and that if you work hard you will be rewarded.  Children are not indentured servants and I don’t think they should be made to do all the housekeeping for absolutely no reward.  They are kids.  Teaching my children the value of work is very important to me and I think an allowance is probably the easiest way to do that.

3. Do you actually park your car in the garage?
This is actually a bit of a sore point for me.  We have a nice spacious two-car garage.  For a few years, we didn’t have a garage door opener, so we parked in the driveway.  When Cole was born I told Zac that I wanted to start parking in the garage since I would be on maternity leave during the hot Georgia summer, so he installed a garage door opener.  I parked in the garage up until November of 2011.  We were coming back from Alabama after Thanksgiving, and when we pulled up in the driveway I pushed the button to open up the garage.  I had unfortunately forgotten that I had pushed the metal lock on the garage door, so when the door opened to that point it got stuck and I am pretty sure I burned up the motor.  It will cut on but won’t pull the door up anymore.  I am very, very sad about this.  But now we also have a huge china cabinet to refinish in my side of the garage, so I couldn’t park in there anyway until that project is done.  Zac’s side of the garage is the home of the lawnmowers, his work benches, a taken apart bed frame, and my ping-pong table from college.

4. What is one food you will NEVER cook?
Seafood.  Don’t like it, won’t touch it, won’t ever cook it.  In any form or creature or species.  Or collard greens, because they smell like a giant poot.

5. Do you have anything exciting planned for the summer?
Apart from our trip to Disney World {IN EIGHT DAYS}, we probably will have a low-key summer.  Cole’s birthday is in June so we will be having him a little party, I’m sure.  We may go spend some time at the lake with my father-in-law, visit family in Birmingham, or head up to Lake Lanier or the mountains for a weekend here and there.  But our big to-do is Disney World, and that’s coming up so very soon!
