37 Weeks = Full Term, Baby!

Or, full-term baby!  37 weeks is considered to be full term, meaning that if the baby was born today he would most likely need zero time in the NICU and his lungs are mature enough to function properly outside the womb.  All very exciting stuff!  And forgive the spotty bathroom mirror shot and my car-washin’ clothes.  I didn’t get a chance to take a picture today and this is the best you get.  I’M 100% REAL, YO.

I had my 37-week appointment this morning.  I didn’t gain any weight since last week, which is miraculous considering that we went to Birmingham for a baby shower thrown by the Mister's wonderful sisters and I ate a lot of the yummy food they prepared, plus our standard visit to Milo’s on the way out of town.  But I have also been very, very busy and active this week so I guess it made up for the excess calories.  My blood pressure was amazing, as always.  Hey, I brag on anything I can at this point.  Baby’s heart rate was great and steady at 150, my Group B strep culture came back negative, and everything was normal with my urine samples.  The only thing that was slightly out of the ordinary was my fundal height.  Ever since they started measuring it, it has been right on track with where I am in the pregnancy.  Even up to last week, when I was told it measured “perfect”.  But this week, the doctor told me I was measuring really far ahead at 42 weeks!  Whaaaaat?  How in the world could my fundal height have jumped so much in just a week??  Especially a week in which I didn’t gain any weight?  Being that I am going to try to VBAC, this sudden increase in measurement was concerning to me.  I asked her if it could be that he is just in a weird position or something.  She said that could be it, or there could just be extra amniotic fluid if I have been drinking more water than usual (which I have).  We will know more at the growth ultrasound next week, so for now I’m not too concerned.  I don’t feel like I look that much bigger in just a week, and again, no weight gain.  Hopefully it’s just an error in measurement, or just a funny position he was in.

As I mentioned, the Burks family has been a flurry of activity this past week.  We have been doing things around the house, setting out in the evenings to pick up little whatnots and necessities, and on Saturday we went to Birmingham for a photo session and baby shower (which will get their own post later).  We came back home on Saturday as well, so it was a very long, very busy, very fun day, 1/4 of it spent in the car driving.  :)  On Sunday we did some more stuff around the house and the yard.  The Mister finished moving Cole’s clothes from the nursery to his new room and emptied out the closets, and he hung the new curtains in the nursery.  Now all we need to do is order the bedding.  I know, I’m a slacker.  I cleaned my car out, moved Cole’s car seat over to the driver side, and installed the infant car seat on the passenger side.  I did all of this by myself, and if you know me at all you know that I am not particularly mechanically inclined so this was a big accomplishment for me.  :pats self on back:  This evening I hand-washed the car in the driveway.  I have weird nesting spells.

In Cole news, he slept ALL NIGHT in his big boy bed for the first time last night.  He usually wakes up at least once, but the Mister had to go in there and wake him up at 7:15 this morning.  It was glorious.  The Mister is now attempting to get him to sleep.  I hope he is successful, because I’m usually the one who gets him to sleep and lately he has been falling asleep in our bed and the Mister will move him to his bed.  This has to stop.  Hopefully it will be an easy transition for my little guy.  I hope we didn’t let our little bad habit continue for too long.  He’s never been a great sleeper, so we just kind of went with what worked.  But now it won’t work for much longer so it’s time to nip it.  Maybe one day before he is 10 he will start putting himself to sleep.

From BabyCenter:

“Your baby is now considered “full term,” even though your due date is three weeks away. If you go into labor now, his lungs will likely be mature enough to fully adjust to life outside the womb. (Some babies need a bit more time, though. So if you’re planning to have a repeat c-section, for example, your practitioner will schedule it for no earlier than 39 weeks unless there’s a medical reason to intervene earlier.)

Your baby weighs 6 1/3 pounds and measures a bit over 19 inches, head to heel (like a stalk of Swiss chard). Many babies have a full head of hair at birth, with locks from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches long. But don’t be surprised if your baby’s hair isn’t the same color as yours. Dark-haired couples are sometimes thrown for a loop when their children come out as blonds or redheads, and fair-haired couples have been surprised by Elvis look-alikes. And then, of course, some babies sport only peach fuzz.

Braxton Hicks contractions may be coming more frequently now and may last longer and be more uncomfortable. You might also notice an increase in vaginal discharge. If you see some “bloody show” (mucus tinged with a tiny amount of blood) in the toilet or in your undies, labor is probably a few days away — or less. (If you have heavier spotting or bleeding, call your caregiver immediately.) Also be sure to ask your caregiver about the results of your Group B strep culture. That way, if the result isn’t yet on your chart when you get to the hospital or birth center, you’ll be able to give the staff there a timely heads-up if you need antibiotics.

It may be harder than ever to get comfortable enough to sleep well at night. If you can, take it easy through the day — this may be your last chance to do so for quite a while. Keep monitoring your baby’s movements, too, and let your caregiver know immediately if you notice a decrease. Though her quarters are getting cozy, she should still be as active as before.

While you’re sleeping, you’re likely to have some intense dreams. Anxiety both about labor and about becoming a parent can fuel a lot of strange flights of unconscious fancy.”

How Far Along? 37 weeks.

Movement? Yep.

Food Craving?  Today I got hit with a craving for chicken and dressing from Cafe on Main, a little restaurant in Trussville, where we used to live.  Too bad  we won’t be back in Birmingham until Thanksgiving.  Maybe I can convince someone to bring me some…

Food aversions? Whatever has previously made me vomit.

Morning sickness? Nope.

Symptoms?  Contractions when I walk around too much or do too much around the house.  Terrible complexion.  Same old.

Gender?  Boy boy boy.

Labor Signs?  The sporadic contractions, some pressure down below.

Belly Button?  Basically flat.

What A Week!

It has been quite a week for our little Cole-train!  He has hit two very big milestones:  he went poop on the potty AND pee-pee on the potty!

The poop on the potty was a complete fluke, but by Cod Pitcher I’m still counting it!  On Monday when I picked Cole up from school, I noticed on his daily log sheet that he hadn’t pooped all day.  On days like that I tend to watch him more carefully in the evenings because I know he is going to poop.  Well, he didn’t poop all evening, and then it was bathtime.  I am usually able to run around the bedroom and do other things while he plays in the bath, but this time I figured I had better stay in there with him in case he decided to let one fly in the bathtub.  Sure enough, he started making his signature poop face.  I asked him if he had to go poop, and he said no.  A couple more times he made the face, but insisted that he didn’t have to go poop.  Then finally, I knew he was about to go, there was no stopping it.  So I grabbed him up out of the tub and set him on his potty.  And he went poop!  ON THE POTTY!  Of course we went crazy with praising him.  I know it wasn’t on purpose, but hopefully this will be the start of him making the association that poop goes in the potty.

But last night was NOT a fluke!  Last night Cole went pee-pee in the potty (urinal, actually) on purpose!  And I MISSED IT.  We went to Discover Mills last night to check out Motherhood Maternity to see if they had any dresses for our photo session on Saturday morning, and afterward we just walked around a little.  We saw a store full of inflatables, and it was $7 for a half hour of bouncing.  Since Cole had been in the stroller for an hour, we figured that would be a good way for him to bounce out some energy before heading home.  So he bounced and bounced.  It was great fun to watch.  He even climbed all the way up the giant inflatable slide and slid down all by himself.  Over and over and over.  He was worn out by the time he was done bouncing.  Best $7 spent ever.  We stopped by the restroom on the way out (because, being pregnant, it’s what I do), and I took the stroller and the Mister took Cole.  I was in and out, and wondering what was taking them so long.  I could hear a lot of commotion coming from the men’s restroom, but couldn’t tell what was going on.  After a few minutes of waiting, Cole ran out to me and said “Mommy!  I went pee pee on the potty!”  I looked at the Mister, who confirmed that this was in fact truth.  Hooray!  I picked Cole up and swung him around and told him that I was so proud of him, to which he replied, “I’m so proud of you too!  Can we get some ice cream?”  It was a little late for that, but I did give him a marshmallow when we got home and made sure he knew it was because he used the potty.

We have been casually introducing him to the potty for the last few months, but boys take longer to potty train than girls so we haven’t really been pushing it very hard.  But even if these are one-time events, I can still see a light at the end of the tunnel.  He has proven to us that he CAN use the potty.  It’s now a matter of us finding the right motivator to encourage him to WANT to use the potty.  But now, I am hopeful that one day in the very near future, I will not have to buy two sizes of diapers at the same time.  I think we may try the Three Day Potty Training method over the long Labor Day weekend.  I know several moms who have had a lot of success with it, and what better time than a weekend we will both be at home for three days?  Wish us luck.

35/35!

We are at that fun juncture in pregnancy: 35 weeks down, 35 days to go!  A little over one month left.  I know I say this all the time, but it’s still a little unbelievable that we will have another sweet baby boy in roughly a month.  I can’t wait to meet him, but at the same time I would like him to bake for at least three more weeks.  Which will pass by so quickly, it’s kind of scary.

We’re relatively prepared for Little Brother to arrive, except for a few details like ordering his bedding and moving the rest of Cole’s clothes into his new room, and getting Cole accustomed to his new room.  I’d like to get the bassinet put together sometime this week and possibly go ahead and install the infant car seat base, but if I don’t get around to it that’s okay.  Hmm.  Maybe I should go ahead and pack a bag for the hospital.  It seems like I had all of this stuff done way before this point last time around.  Oh well.  It’ll get done.  He’ll have a bed and clothes and diapers and milk by the time he arrives, one way or another.  We’re much more relaxed this time around, thankfully.  Having a busy toddler to take care of tends to keep you occupied.  :)

I have actually been in some pain this weekend.  My mom came to visit and due to a series of unfortunate events, we ended up walking nearly a mile at 10:00 at night through the parking decks at Lenox Square on Saturday night, which didn’t really help matters as regards my symphysis pubis pain.  I do think I succeeded in getting the baby to drop down a little bit, so hopefully he will engage soon and stay put.  All of his movements have been a bit lower than normal; I’m still having trouble breathing though.  He’s still a pretty big little guy even though I’m told he’s only measuring in the 70th to 75th percentile.  Pregnancy amnesia definitely occurred between carrying Cole and this baby.  I honestly don’t remember being in this much pain last time.  I remember some hip pain and some shortness of breath, but not to this extent.  Maybe the heat has had something to do with it, as well as the aforementioned busy toddler keeping me very busy in the evenings and on weekends.  I’ve started watching people as they move around the office at work and started using them as my own little courier service of sorts.  If I need something from the file room I wait for someone to walk by me going in there and ask them to bring it to me.  If someone from the other side of the office ventures over, I send documents back to the other side with them.  Desperate times call for desperate measures, right?  The transition from sitting to standing has become such an ordeal for me that I try to do it as seldom as possible.  Which is probably counterproductive, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.

From BabyCenter:

“Your baby doesn’t have much room to maneuver now that he’s over 18 inches long and tips the scales at 5 1/4 pounds (pick up a honeydew melon). Because it’s so snug in your womb, he isn’t likely to be doing somersaults anymore, but the number of times he kicks should remain about the same. His kidneys are fully developed now, and his liver can process some waste products. Most of his basic physical development is now complete — he’ll spend the next few weeks putting on weight.

Your uterus — which was entirely tucked away inside your pelvis when you conceived — now reaches up under your rib cage. If you could peek inside your womb, you’d see that there’s more baby than amniotic fluid in there now. Your ballooning uterus is crowding your other internal organs, too, which is why you probably have to urinate more often and may be dealing with heartburn and other gastrointestinal distress. If you’re not grappling with these annoyances, you’re one of the lucky few.

From here on out, you’ll start seeing your practitioner every week. Sometime between now and 37 weeks, she’ll do a vaginal and rectal culture to check for bacteria called Group B streptococci (GBS). (Don’t worry — the swab is the size of a regular cotton swab, and it won’t hurt at all.) GBS is usually harmless in adults, but if you have it and pass it on to your baby during birth, it can cause serious complications, such as pneumonia, meningitis, or a blood infection. Because 10 to 30 percent of pregnant women have the bacteria and don’t know it, it’s vital to be screened. (The bacteria come and go on their own — that’s why you weren’t screened earlier in pregnancy.) If you’re a GBS carrier, you’ll get IV antibiotics during labor, which will greatly reduce your baby’s risk of infection.

This is also a good time to create a birth plan. Using our form will help you focus on specifics — like who’ll be present, what pain management techniques you want to try, and where you want your baby to stay after you deliver. It will give you a starting point to discuss your preferences with your medical team. Childbirth is unpredictable, and chances are you won’t follow your plan to the letter, but thinking about your choices ahead of time — and sharing your preferences with your caregiver — should take some of the anxiety out of the process.”

Hooray for waste products!  Yay for butt swabs!

How Far Along? 35 weeks.

Total Weight Gained/Loss? Last official weigh-in was 20 pounds.

Maternity Clothes?  Yep.

Sleep? Eh.  We all slept in all weekend, which was nice.  I could have slept all day, though.

Best Moment of the Week? Spending some time with my mom, and getting some things done around the house while she occupied Cole.  And eating a yummy steak that the Mister grilled last night.  It was delicious.

Movement? Oh yes.

Food Craving?  None to speak of this week.

Food aversions? Whatever has previously made me vomit.

Morning sickness? Nope.

Symptoms?  Acne, hip pain, fatigue, some Braxton Hicks contractions.

Gender?  Little brother.

Labor Signs? None yet.  I’ll definitely be on the lookout for them though.

Belly Button?  Yucky, according to Cole.

What I miss?  Being able to stand up without searing pain in my hips.

What I’m looking forward to?  Being done with all the little things we have to get done.

Milestones?   35/35.  Getting to be pregnant another week.

*Yes, I've started using my son's actual name instead of his initials.  We're not important enough to preserve that sort of anonymity, and when Baby Brother is born I will have two CJs to write about so I'm just going to start using their given names.  The Mister will still be the Mister, though.  :)

34 Weeks

So this week has been better than last week.  Although not so good that I was able to get a blog post up in a timely fashion.  But oh well.

I don't really have much to add this week.  The Mister and I have both been really busy at work and at home in the evenings.  There is so much to do and clean.  The plus side is that the Mister's back is feeling better after a few cracks and stretches at the chiropractor, so he is back to his semi-normal self.  I'm just plugging along, feeling huge and hot.  I've been very tired lately, but I've been getting to bed a little later and tossing and turning a bit more trying to get comfortable.

Little Brother is getting bigger every day.  It is really weirding me out to think that I could ostensibly go into labor at any time.  I mean, 34 weeks is pretty far along in a pregnancy.  They wouldn't try to stop labor if it started at this point.  I might get a steroid shot to help mature his lungs, but right now if the baby's a-comin' the baby's a-comin'.  And honestly, I'm actually looking forward to my first internal exam at my 36-week appointment.  I'm actually hoping that I will have dilated at least a fingertip.  That way I will have some sort of idea if things are actually going to get started on their own any time soon.  I've worked out a plan with my coworkers to begin after the long Labor Day (haha) weekend.  This plan will include daily walks to the Colony Square food court or Starbucks, walking the stairs at random intervals throughout the day, and bouncing on an exercise ball instead of sitting in an office chair.  Home plans include evening primrose oil, more walking, heavy cleaning, copious amounts of pineapple, and doing what got me in this situation in the first place.

From BabyCenter:

"Your baby now weighs about 4 3/4 pounds (like your average cantaloupe) and is almost 18 inches long. His fat layers — which will help regulate his body temperature once he's born — are filling him out, making her rounder. His skin is also smoother than ever. His central nervous system is maturing and his lungs are continuing to mature as well. If you've been nervous about preterm labor, you'll be happy to know that babies born between 34 and 37 weeks who have no other health problems generally do fine. They may need a short stay in the neonatal nursery and may have a few short-term health issues, but in the long run, they usually do as well as full-term babies.

By this week, fatigue has probably set in again, though maybe not with the same coma-like intensity of your first trimester. Your tiredness is perfectly understandable, given the physical strain you're under and the restless nights of frequent pee breaks and tossing and turning, while trying to get comfortable. Now's the time to slow down and save up your energy for labor day (and beyond). If you've been sitting or lying down for a long time, don't jump up too quickly. Blood can pool in your feet and legs, causing a temporary drop in your blood pressure when you get up that can make you feel dizzy.

If you notice itchy red bumps or welts on your belly and possibly your thighs and buttocks as well, you may have a condition called pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP for short). Up to one percent of pregnant women develop PUPPP, which is harmless but can be quite uncomfortable. See your practitioner so she can make sure it's not a more serious problem, provide treatment to make you more comfortable, and refer you to a dermatologist if necessary. Also be sure to call her if you feel intense itchiness all over your body, even if you don't have a rash. It could signal a liver problem."

How Far Along? 34 weeks.  How did I get here so fast?

Total Weight Gained/Loss? Down a pound from my 32-week visit.  So official total is 20 pounds.

Maternity Clothes?  Absolutely.

Sleep? Yawn.

Best Moment of the Week? Totally getting hit on in front of my building yesterday when I was walking somewhere to get lunch.  Still got it.

Movement? Plentiful and painful.

Food Craving?  Milk.

Food aversions? Whatever has previously made me vomit.

Morning sickness? Nope.

Symptoms?  Sleeeeeepy.

Gender?  Sweet baby boy.

Labor Signs? None, and I’d like to make it to 38 weeks without any labor symptoms.

Belly Button?  Flat and starting to poke out a little bit on the top.

What I miss?  Sleeping.

What I’m looking forward to?  My mom is visiting this weekend, so hopefully we will be able to get a lot done around the house with her help.

Milestones?   Getting to be pregnant another week.

Pinterest Challenge Follow-Up

You can read the original post here.

So after my week's deferment on Young House Love's Pinterest Challenge and choosing a new project, I have completed my first project that I pinned.  I have been seeing various yarn crafts all over Pinterest, and since I had a lot of yarn sitting around I thought I would try my hand at a couple of yarn wreaths:  one for a friend of mine who is due with her second daughter three days before me, and one for our hospital door for when Little Brother is born.  I completed my friend's wreath first, since her first child came by complete surprise at 36w4d.  Time was of the essence.

I started with a plain old wreath form from Michael's, although I did see something (on Pinterest, of course) saying to use foam plumbing tubing from Lowe's or Home Depot to save some bucks.  I might try that next time.  Then I wrapped it in some multicolor yarn that wasn't overly girly.  Start to finish, I'd say this part took less than an hour.

Forgive the image quality, these are cell phone pics.  The tedious part now done, I relocated to my sewing table to start on some handmade felt flowers.  I did a few large and a few small, just for variety.  They were so easy and turned out so cute.

More flowers made, more flowers hot glued onto the wreath.

My friend's baby doesn't have a name yet, so I just went with Baby Girl.  I mixed together some paint and painted some chipboard letters a rosy pink color to match some of the yarn.  Here's the wreath almost finished.  I didn't take a picture after I painted the letters, so this will have to suffice.

I am actually very proud of how my very first yarn wreath turned out.  I'm not what you would call crafty at all, but this was such an easy project that even I couldn't mess it up.  And now I have a nice go-to baby gift that doesn't take a lot of time or money.  For Little Brother's wreath I'm going with a pirate/ocean theme, so I'll probably put some felt waves on the bottom quarter of the wreath, and probably a whale and a pirate ship with his name across the top.

Yes, we've decided on a name, but we won't tell anyone until we've told him.  :)

Did you do a craft this week?  Any fun pins?

33 Weeks. Blargh.

Week 33 of this pregnancy has not been the greatest. As you can plainly see on my face over there. I didn’t even get around to taking a picture until Friday, and I was on the rebound from some kind of sickness that kept me out of work on Thursday. I don’t know what it was, but whatever was in my stomach on Thursday had to come out by any means necessary, resulting in me puking in the bathtub twice. I was out of the bed for a grand total of 30 minutes. Friday I felt well enough to go to work but nowhere near 100%. And my entire body was hurting from being in the bed all day Thursday and from being slightly dehydrated. Not a fun two days, for sure.

It is now Saturday and I am feeling pretty normal. Well, normal for me. Actually, I am feeling pretty good today. My hips don’t really hurt and I can breathe pretty well. Heartburn has been kept pretty much at bay due to my light diet over the past two days. I’ve actually been a pretty busy little bee today. We all got up around 7:30 and I made breakfast for everyone. Then I separated all the laundry and put in a few loads, did some dishes, worked on a few crafty-type projects (and burned my thumbprints off in the process), made lunch for me and the boy, took a nap, put in more laundry, unloaded and loaded the dishwasher, made dinner, and got started on Baby Brother’s hospital door wreath. Now we’re all sitting downstairs watching Wall-E and playing with the new train table. All in all, I’d say this was a fairly productive Saturday. I’m hoping I can round out the weekend with a nice productive Sunday. I’d like to get the whole house vacuumed, sweep and mop the hardwoods, mop the kitchen, and change the sheets. We’ll see how that works out for me. But if I put it out there in the universe, I might be more inclined to stick to the plan, right? Right.

In Big Boy news, we got CJ's mattress on Monday night! His room is starting to come together. As soon as we get his quilt and curtain and some bumpers so he doesn’t roll off, we will be ready to start transitioning him. I’d planned to do it sooner than now, but life happens and things change. I figure as long as we give him at least a month to sleep in there without the baby being here, he will be okay with leaving the nursery. And if not, the baby will be sleeping in our room for the first several weeks anyway, so we will have that extra time to transition him. I’m so excited to finish both rooms!

I’m feeling fairly large this week. Little brother must have gone through a growth spurt. His movements are downright painful, and it feels like he is using my ribs as monkey bars. It’s getting harder and harder to get up and down from the couch or the bed, and I can’t really bend over to do anything to my feet. I desperately need a pedicure, speaking of. My shoes are getting a bit tighter. I blame the heat. I just hope our office manager doesn’t object to me wearing Birkenstocks a lot over the next six weeks.

From BabyCenter:

“This week your baby weighs a little over 4 pounds (heft a pineapple) and has passed the 17-inch mark. He’s rapidly losing that wrinkled, alien look and his skeleton is hardening. The bones in his skull aren’t fused together, which allows them to move and slightly overlap, thus making it easier for him to fit through the birth canal. (The pressure on the head during birth is so intense that many babies are born with a conehead-like appearance.) These bones don’t entirely fuse until early adulthood, so they can grow as his brain and other tissue expands during infancy and childhood.

As your baby fills out even more of your belly, lots of things might start to change: Whereas before you were sashaying, you may find yourself waddling. Finding an easy position to sit in — let alone sleep — is becoming more of a challenge. And bumping into chairs and counters is par for the course.

You may be feeling some achiness and even numbness in your fingers, wrists, and hands. Like many other tissues in your body, those in your wrist can retain fluid, which can increase pressure in the carpal tunnel, a bony canal in your wrist. Nerves that run through this “tunnel” may end up pinched, creating numbness; tingling, shooting or burning pain; or a dull ache. Try wearing a splint to stabilize your wrist or propping your arm up with a pillow when you sleep. If your work requires repetitive hand movements (at a keyboard or on an assembly line, for instance), remember to stretch your hands when you take breaks — which should be frequently.

Many women are still feeling sexy at this stage — and their partners often agree. You may need to make some adjustments, but for most women, sex during pregnancy is fine right up until their water breaks or their labor starts.”

Everything about this pregnancy has really been quite textbook and average. Things have been happening just as they should have, fitting right along with these little BabyCenter updates. I’m quite thankful for such a noneventful pregnancy, and I hope and pray it continues on that way.
