So as you may or may not know, I've been going through sleep hell for the past several weeks.  Let me preface this by saying that CJ used to be the King of All Sleepers.  He started sleeping through the night at around 8 weeks old, and consistently slept all night for several months.  This was amazing timing, since I went back to work when he was 11 weeks old and really needed to get some quality sleep.  I was ever so grateful for this fortunate turn of events.

But I got cocky.  Whenever people would ask whether or not he slept all night, I would reply smugly, "of COURSE he sleeps all night, he's such a great little sleeper!"  Other new moms would complain about their lack of sleep, and I would smile to myself, inwardly gloating that MY child slept all night with no sleep training.  I was proud of my good sleeper, as if his penchant for 9 hours of sleep had ANYTHING AT ALL to do with me.

Well, fast forward to the end of March/beginning of April.  The gods decided that the time for my comeuppance was at hand.  BAM.  Sleep issues.  It started with waking up an hour or two earlier than normal.  Not too bad, except that last sleep cycle was interrupted and left me a bit tired the next day.  Then CJ started waking up two or three hours after I put him down.  And again one or two hours before waking up.  He eventually evened out to waking up once around 2 or 3 a.m.  I could live with that, but yet again the deepest part of my sleep was being continually interrupted.  I was EXHAUSTED.  Still am.  My body and brain can not sustain this continuous level of sleep deprivation.  Something had to give.

So one desperate Saturday night a couple of weeks ago, after putting CJ down around 8:15 and hearing him wake up promptly at midnight, I decided that I had had all I could take, and I couldn't take any more.  CJ was going to cry it out that night.  I went in and calmed him down, not picking him up, and then left the room.  He screamed again.  I returned after five minutes and patted him down again.  Left the room, he screamed.  Seven minutes later, I went back in.  Repeat.  He cried for another seven minutes, then rolled over and went to sleep.  And slept until 8:00 the next morning.  It was glorious.  I felt like a brand new woman.  It was also short-lived, because CJ was back to his old disjointed sleep pattern the next night.  But that one full night of sleep gave me enough hope to get through the hard nights.

The thing is, I can't stay up to let him cry it out during the week because it's just easier to put him in bed with us when he cries.  He typically will go right back to sleep, but I have to sleep (or attempt to sleep) sitting halfway up propped on various pillows because God forbid I attempt to move the child off me and onto the bed.  He will promptly wake up and the cycle will begin anew.  And during the week, in my just-woken-from-sleep stupor, I have to do what will get us all back to sleep fastest because 5:30 a.m. comes awful early and I have to be somewhat bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for work.  On the weekends, I feel like I am afforded a little more flexibility to sleep-train without it affecting my job performance or reaction time in Atlanta traffic.  I know it's inconsistent, but I do what I have to do.

ANYway.

CJ cried it out last week during the week.  He was fighting sleep, flopping around like a rejected House of Pain song.  I had spent nearly an hour trying to put him down, and I had reached my limit.  It again took about 30 minutes.  But he slept all night.  I tell you, the worst part of CIO is the sleep sniffles for the first 20 minutes or so after he falls asleep.  After that, glorious steady breathing and sleep.  And tonight, at my parents' house, in a pack and play, he cried for 5 minutes, and then I successfully patted him to sleep for the first time EVER.  That was two hours ago and he is still asleep.  I'm so proud of him for being able to fall asleep without being rocked or nursed that I could just burst out into song.  Hopefully this will become a trend, or at least give me the encouragement to be consistent with sleep training so I don't give him mixed signals.  I just want us all to sleep better so we can all be happier.

When I first became a mother, I told myself that I could never, EVER let my child cry himself to sleep.  Cruel, heinous, and selfish, I said.  Well, obviously I have since changed my tune.  Desperate times call for desperate measures, and I, my friends, was desperate.  Am desperate.  I need to sleep.  And you know what?  After CJ cries it out and falls asleep, the next morning he is still thrilled to see me when he wakes up.  He hugs me just the same, and gives me sweet kisses just like he always does.  He's well rested, I'm well rested, and we're ready to face the day with smiles on our faces.

Moms who are going through sleep hell and are doing CIO, it may be hard at first, but it gets easier, it gets shorter, and hopefully it will become unnecessary.  Good luck!

1. Is there something you've always wanted to try but just can't muster up the courage to actually do yet?

Hmm.  I think I'd like to get back into rock climbing seriously.  I dabbled when I was younger and more in shape, but I'd like to do the whole gear and ropes and climbing trips thing.  But I'd have to lose a ton of weight to feel comfortable enough to even attempt it.  So I guess I should tackle that first.

2. If you had $100 handed to you in cash without your significant other knowing about it, what would you spend it on?

Honestly?  I'd probably hang onto it.  I have a really hard time spending money on myself.  Id rather have money in my pocket than a shiny new bauble.  If I HAD to spend it, I would probably buy a new pair of shoes.

3. What was your favorite piece of playground equipment as a child?

I loved the swings.  They are still my favorite!  Whenever we take CJ to the park, I will swing beside him on the big swings while the Mister pushes him in the kid swing.  I still like to swing really high and jump out of them too.

4. Do you prefer a sweet or hearty breakfast?

I like both!  Gimme pancakes with syrup or waffles with powdered sugar and a side of bacon and eggs with hash browns covered in ketchup.  I'm a big fan of breakfast, in case you haven't noticed.

5. Are you a Neat Freak or a Messy Bessy?

Total Messy Bessy.  I'm not dirty, but I am content to live amongst clutter.  It's a daily struggle to keep my desk at work presentable, and at least part of every weekend is spent cleaning up the week's clutter in my house.  The only thing I am weird about is having a clean kitchen and a clean bathroom.  I can't stand dishes in the sink or ring-around-the-tub.  And don't even get me started on toilets.  They.  Must.  SPARKLE.

That's it!  Head over to Mama M.'s place and link up your answers.  And everyone have a wonderful Friday!

I'm working on some guest posts that are taking up the majority of my blogging brain space, so I find myself suffering from a bit of writer's block.

Soooooo, how about some bathtime pictures?!

That last one is bad, but the look on CJ's face is priceless.

This week has been killing me.  Work has been crazy, and promises to get crazier in the coming weeks.

When I get home I have two hours to play with CJ, feed him dinner, bathe him, and put him to bed.

By that time, it's around 8:30.  Sometimes closer to 9pm.  Some days I have the gumption to get on the treadmill, type out a blog or two, check message boards, and tweet to my Twits.

Other days, I sit on the couch and fall asleep.  The Mister has to shake me awake to tell me to go to bed.  This has been the case for the past week.

But this weekend the little guy and I are going to Birmingham, so I should have some spare time to catch up while he plays with Grandmommy and Big Poppa.

Until then, I'm in survival mode.

A few weeks ago, Sheila Hoeft at the Dotmine Group contacted me about reviewing one of their fabulous day planners.  I swear, people, it was like she reached into my innermost thoughts and heard my cries for help on organizational matters, and came to the rescue.  A little about Dotmine:

Our concept is simple: create fashionable, functional, and  affordable day planners to help individuals and families keep track of busy schedules.  Our day planners are designed to meet the specific, unique needs of families and professionals to increase efficiency and minimize confusion.   We are run by the 2 moms that started the business, myself (part-time sales working mom) and our PR professional mom.

Simple.  Fashionable.  Functional.  Affordable. These were the qualities I was looking for in a planner.  I was having trouble finding just the right day planner to fit my needs in the aisles of my local bookstores and mega-retailers.  The planners I came across were either too simple or too complex to fit my needs, and if they were serviceable they were ugly and EXPENSIVE.  Dotmine to the rescue!  Sheila sent me a beautiful family_time.mine day planner.

This planner is about the size of a normal school notebook.  There is also a smaller planner that would be suitable for tossing into your handbag or diaper bag.  But I love the big one.  This, moms, is your command center.  It fits perfectly in the outer pocket of my breastpump bag, so it goes to work with me every day and I set it out open on my desk for easy access.  I find myself turning to it to jot down appointments and activities several times a day.  The front and back cover of the planner is made of durable plastic, so you don't have to worry about the cover getting ripped or wrinkled, and if you spill your coffee  on it, no worries.  You just wipe it off.  Good as new!

Each planner runs 17 months, from August to the next December.  That way you're not left high and dry if you forget to order another planner.  The family_time.mine gives you a couple of months grace period between buying planners.  At the beginning and end of the planner there are large master scheduling guides to put your static activities (gym, tan, laundry, etc.) for the week and also on a daily hour-by-hour basis.  As a working mom I wasn't really able to utilize these much, but I can definitely see how a busy stay-at-home mom would find these extremely beneficial (especially moms with multiple children who are involved in many activities).  There is a page for your personal information and emergency contact numbers, as well as a list of the year's holidays.  There is a monthly view, and each week has its own page.  One awesome detail about the planner is the detachable sidebar, which is great for grocery lists, tasks, and other to-do items.  Just make your grocery list during the day and tear it out to go to the store (or pass off to your hubby so he can go).  There is plenty of space to write for each day, and a segment in the sidebar to stick a post-it note.  After the weekly days are done, there is a full page dedicated to notes.  You can use it to start planning for the next month or even jot down your thoughts about things that have gone on that you may want to elaborate on for your blog.  Another thing that I found really fun about the planner was that there are little quotes along the bottom of most pages.  Por exemplo:

The first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: Decide what you want. -Ben Stein

I LOVE that kind of stuff.  It's the little things in life that make me happy, and the family_time.mine is chock full of little details that make my heart sing.  At the back of the planner there is a section called Family Business, which has a place for you to keep all the information of your family's various business-related contacts.  It has a place for your accountant, your bank, your church, children's coaches, doctors, dentists, attorney, car repair, favorite takeout places, even your veterinarian for your furry babies.  There's a page for friends and family information, work contacts,  and even a page for your kids to write down their friends' names and phone numbers.

I also love the page for the babysitter.  It has a place for all of the vital information: mom and dad's cell numbers, neighbors, doctors, important info about the kids (birthdate, allergies, etc.), and a blank space for a post-it note to let the sitter know where you will be.  I love how they give you dedicated space to utilize post-it notes, because at any given time my house is covered in post-its.

Another great little thing I love about this planner is that it has a page of stickers for you to use throughout the planner.  There are stickers for birthdays, bills, vacations, games, dental and doctor appointments, days off from school, date nights, holidays, anniversaries, and the all-important monthly breast self-exam.

Finally, there is a pocket on the inside back cover.  I love pockets.  I feel the same way about pockets in notebooks as I do about cabinets: you can never have enough.  You can stick your receipts, info sheets, doctor notes, prescriptions, anything in the pocket for safe keeping until you get home.

Overall, I have really enjoyed having this planner.  It is durable, easy to read and use, and full of thoughtful little details that are tailor-made for busy moms.  I'm looking forward to picking out my next one in August and getting to use it for the whole year.  And the price?  Virtually a steal at around $18.  You pay nearly as much for a plain old day planner with just dates and not enough writing space.

However, one lucky reader won't have to worry about the price, because the Dotmine Group is giving one winner a free family_time.mine planner!

WTF

This "no new paragraph when I press the enter key" is really starting to annoy me.

I don't know what happened.

Anyone else have this problem?

I refuse to start entering my posts in HTML because it used to work just fine in visual.

Fix it, Wordpress!

ETA:  I seem to have found a fix.  Here it is, for posterity and future reference.

voolavex Member May 5, 2008, 2:22 AM

You don't have to do any of this. Go to perma link and bringt he post up for editing in visual. Highlight the post. Go to format. Choose paragraph. Go to justify and justify the text. Go to Save. Hit save. Go to view post. View post. It worked for me and I am virtually clueless.

I am going to press the enter key after this sentence to see if there is a blank line between this sentence and the next.  Ready?  Here goes. There, did that work?  Let's publish it and see. Well, it didn't work.  I JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO HAVE SEPARATE PARAGRAPHS.  IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK, WORDPRESS?  IS IT??
